Modular Pieces

Paper Sculpture, Modular Design, Spatial Design

Taking two 2D shape designs, I cute several slits at different angles on each shape. With around 14 pieces of each shape, I interlocked them at random to construct this sculpture. For the individual shapes, I drew inspiration from the swirls and curves from my shell design.

Prototype Version

With my first attempt at this assignment, I created a simpler form that could be greated geometrically. Putting 4 pieces together outlines a circle. Through experimenting around with different interlocking orientations, I found this portal like structure to be most dynamic.

I realize that laying the sculpture down created a diffrent atmosphere; like a shaded and modular resting area. Because of the number of slits, I aimed to loosen up how I generated each shape for the next assignment.

Final Version

For the next iteration of module shapes, we were allowed 2 variations. I started to think about what forms could share similar shape grammar to bring a cohesive look.

Instead of just 2 slits, I also cut more slits from varying angles, so the structure could be built with further dimentionality.

Initially, I tried to extract two shapes by finding complementary forms within a circle and square relationship. Gradually, I ventured into more organic shapes, making more spontaneous curves and lines.

The final two modular pieces ultimately were inspired by the negative and positive shapes I created in my shell design. This time, I imagined the resulting sculpture to be a walkthrough attraction. Perhaps integrated at an amusement park, or placed in front of an aquarium, the installation provides shade and evokes a sense wonder for its guests.
